Thanking God for Josiah Edward Katterson

At 11:52pm on Saturday, March 29, 2014, Josiah Edward Katterson arrived!  He was 7 lb 11oz and 20 inches long.

We receive him as a special priceless gift from God.  Who is sufficient to care for and lead and shepherd and point to Jesus a little immortal soul?  How we pray for God to come and shore up our weaknesses and give Joey all that we are unable to--most of all a heart that loves and trusts in Jesus all the days of his life!

Still Waiting

Confirming reports that baby has not yet come.

Yesterday was the Due Date, so we all took a trip to the mall to have a nice stroll (and drive some cool cars).

[Note: Victor's been doing much better, but he got all congested again last night and has a bit of a barky cough today, so would appreciate continued prayers for healing and wisdom if there is something else going on... allergies, something like that?]

And, the official 40 week photo (I realized yesterday that I have pretty much no belly shots from this whole pregnancy.  Unlike with Victor, when I sent my family a picture every week...)

In other news, at Once Upon a Child on Wednesday, I was asked if I am a grandmother.  At 40-weeks-minus-1-day pregnant, with a two-year-old running around with me, I just wasn't sure what to think about that.  Time for a new hairstyle?  I remind someone of Abraham's Sarah?

Ice Cream and Planes

Today is Ben's first day of spring break (although he is currently finishing his last midterm...), so we had a little family outing to celebrate the wonderful luxury of a whole week off of classes!

After a few failed attempts to connect with some other folks for an outing, we decided to just take a little field trip on our own, to the Commemorative Air Force Hangar and Museum in South St. Paul.

We started off with some ice cream from Coldstone Creamery to share on the way.

Super Special Outing

I wouldn't say I exactly have a "bucket list" of exciting things I want to do before I die.  (I would be the boring, don't-really-aspire-to-great-heights-of-fun counterbalance to my adventurous husband...) But of expensive restaurants I never thought I'd eat at, The Melting Pot (a fondue restaurant) has always been a secret desire of mine to try.

And a week ago, Thursday night (as a belated Valentine's Day / last hurrah before Baby Brother arrives), Ben took me there!

Well, to be slightly more specific, I barely made it there (a very educational trip) all on my own.  For anyone who may find themselves at the Mall of America, looking for the Blue Line bus route to the Nicollet Mall Station in downtown Minneapolis, be advised that there is no Blue Line bus route.

Apparently the rest of the masses in Minneapolis are smart enough to figure out by intuition (because I never did find it posted anywhere) that the Blue Line refers to the light rail.  But I figured it out by finally mustering my courage to climb on some random bus at the station and asking the driver... who didn't know, but an obliging patron sitting nearby informed me that the Blue Line is THE TRAIN!

So, with as much speed as a 38-week-pregnant lady can muster, I hustled over to the train platform, somehow deciphered the payment machine to get a ticket (which, incidentally, no one ever checked?).  And I made it on board with one minute to spare.

After a brisk walk from the station (two blocks the wrong direction and then five the correct direction), I worked up a great appetite for dinner.  Ben had the harder task of finding street parking nearby, coming from church, so I was seated and got to enjoy the view of the Foshay Tower for a couple minutes while I waited for him.

The ambiance was the absolute best that I've ever experienced.  We had a half-circle booth facing a window and never saw anybody but a couple servers walking by... and it was quiet enough to actually hold a conversation!

So, in a meandering fashion, we enjoyed (I'm just writing this out so I can remember the whole experience):

- Spinach Artichoke Cheese Fondue (fontina and butterkase cheeses, spinach, artichoke hearts and garlic) with tortilla chips, French bread, rosemary bread, carrots, broccoli, and apple

- 3-Part Entree cooked (at the table) in Seasoned Court Bouillon... I had Andouille Sausage, Memphis-Style BBQ Pork Medallion, and Seasoned Choice Angus Sirloin, and Ben had Atlantic Salmon, Filet Mignon, and Teriyaki-Marinated Sirloin.  Plus some red potatoes, mushrooms, and summer squash.

And last, but not least (they were running a special, so we got free...)

- Flaming Turtle Chocolate Fondue with strawberries, bananas, cheesecake, Rice Krispie Treats, marshmallows, red velvet cake, and brownies.

It was a lovely meal, not too huge portions, and a wonderful relaxing time.  We had some really good conversation about a blog post that Pastor Sam had recently posted, and all in all, really enjoyed our 2-hour long dinner!

It was a sweet gift and wonderful evening to remember.

Good Report

Very thankful for a good report at my doctor appointment this morning.

- 38 weeks
- Amniotic fluid at 8 cm (they look for minimum of 2 cm)
- Good movements
- Good tone (that would be the baby... not me)
- Good diaphragm use (at long last, had to wait about 20 min to see it)
- Estimated 7 lb (Victor was 6 lb 10 oz).  But that's variable by a pound either way.

The bed is up; the carseat is by the door; the sleepers are washed; teeny-teeny NB diapers are ready.

I'm thinking another solid 2 weeks to go, but we are very thankful that no induction is needed at this point, and we will be ready to hold him when the time is right!

Self-Esteem

From Pastor Sam's blog...

Here’s what G.K. Chesterton said in his book, Orthodoxy:
Once I remember walking with a prosperous publisher, who made a remark which I have often heard before; it is, indeed, almost a motto of the modern world. Yet I had heard it once too often, and I saw suddenly there was nothing in it. The publisher said of somebody, “That man will get on; he believes in himself.” … I said to him, “Shall I tell you where the men are who believe most in themselves? For I can tell you. I know of men who believe in themselves more colossally than Napoleon or Caesar. I can guide you to the thrones of Super-men. The men who really believe in themselves are all in lunatic asylums. … It would be much truer to say that a man will certainly fail, because be believes in himself. Complete self-confidence is not merely a sin; complete self-confidence is a weakness. Believing utterly in one’s self is a hysterical and superstitious belief.”

A Letter to My Big Boy, Victor

Dear Victor,

You are 2 years and 2 months old.  I look at you and can't believe how tall you are, how much you imitate Daddy, how fast you absorb new ideas and information... What a wonderful stage this is.

You are a huge help for Momma.  You have started to set the table, and you do a super job!  Plates, cups, forks, napkins... you put them at the right place and are really particular that nobody is missing anything.  You pick up things I drop, you help with laundry, you carry things, and when we're dusting, you follow right behind me with your own dust rag to get the low spots (where it is increasingly challenging for me to reach).

You are also a great baker.  You love dumping things in the bowl and helping to stir.  Most days you'll say sometime in the morning, "What we bake today?"  And Daddy always enjoys the fruits of our labor.  :)

More and more, your funny side is coming out.  You are full of jokes and laughter.  At supper, when you are done eating, you'll say, "Where did the food go?"  And we ask, "Is it on the floor?  Is it in Daddy's shoe?  Is it on your head?"  And you laugh and say, "NO, it's in the tummy!"  When it's time to bed, you run to sit on Daddy's chair before he gets there to squish you, and then you laugh and laugh.

You are also learning at an incredible rate.  You know all your letters, for sure the upper case and almost all of the lower case.  You can count to 13 or so, and you're very solid on the colors red, orange, and blue (yellow and green are a little iffy still).  You sing lots of songs... current favorites being "O, the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus" and "Amazing Grace."  You work on memorizing verses every day... often you ask to review verses at every meal.  John 14:6, Genesis 1:1, Psalm 56:3, James 1:17, Proverbs 17:17, and Ephesians 6:1 are your "Sunday class verses" that you've got down so far.  (It helps Momma to keep reviewing those verses over and over too!)

You are really absorbed with your Bible story book these days, and you'll spend time most days sitting in Daddy's chair, sometimes with Ducky, reading over the stories front to back.  There may be a lot of details you miss, but we are praying that as the stories grow sweetly familiar, you will more and more understand the big message of God's Word--the great God, the problem of sin in your heart, the amazing gift of Jesus, and salvation through trusting in Him.

You are doing great using the potty chair.  We are pretty loose about trying it, but most days once or twice we'll see if you need to go on it.  And more often than not, you succeed and get a piece of candy for your effort!  I don't really know if this hit-and-miss approach is going to prove helpful in the end, but at least you know what it's there for and are getting familiar with the process.

You are also figuring out new and creative ways to express yourself.  Often, you'll say, "Maybe not" when something is suggested that doesn't agree with you.  Or if you want something to stop, it's "No thank you!"  You're still a pretty mellow and easy-going fellow, but we do see occasional outbursts of strong will breaking out.

You are a huge fan of Daddy these days.  In the morning, he gets you up and changes your diaper, puts on your clothes, reads you a Bible story and prays with you.  Then you come bursting into our room to give me a hug, and then dash out again to sit on the tall chair in the kitchen while Daddy makes you eggs.  It's your special time together.  Very frequently now, you will tell me at night when I put you into your crib, "Mommy not get Victor in the morning?"  And I say, "Nope, Daddy will get you in the morning."  And thus reassured, you will go to sleep.

I love to see you loving Daddy.  You put your napkin on your knee, like he does.  You make funny noises, like he does.  You throw snowballs, like he does.  You do stretches in the living room, like he does.  And your happiest times are when you get to "play toys with Daddy."

Even though I'm not quite as much fun as Dad, you still give me lots of sweet times.  We'll snuggle and read books together, or you'll climb on my back and wait for me to say, "Who's on my back?" and then throw you on the bed.  You still give me the best hugs at bedtime and sometimes will just lean on my shoulder for a long season before I lay you down to sleep.  You're doing so great with independent play when I say I need to wash dishes or when I give you an hour of quiet "play time" in your crib in the mornings so I can work.

I think I'm savoring these days a little extra because soon there will be (Lord willing) a new little boy on the scene.  You will be a great big brother, we think.  And we are praying that the adjustments of this new, needy little person will be far outshone by the great joy of sharing life with Baby Brother.

We don't know quite what to expect in the days ahead.  But God knows, and we are so thankful that He has given us you to share them with!

We love you and love you,
Momma

Celebrating with Pop-Pop

Friday night we had a wonderful time with Pop-Pop! After lots of busy and/or sick weeks, it was a great treat to have a long, relaxed evening with him.

Checking out one of Daddy's favorite YouTube videos

Victor assisted in unwrapping the birthday gift

A good snuggle

Happy birthday to you, Pop-Pop!

Three generations of Katterson men!

Considering we live in the same metro area, we still find getting together with family to be too rare, but it's a wonderful gift when we can!

Funny Boy

[Note: Victor has begun using a potty chair, with substantial success.  Not officially potty-training, but the boy has definitely gotten a lot of candy out of the deal, and he is certainly learning.]

Victor, to Mommy (in the restroom),
putting a hand on my arm:
"Just relax."

****

At bedtime, Victor, looking at Mommy's big belly: "What color is Baby Brother?"
Mommy: "He's the same color you are."
Victor: "Baby Brother is blue.  Victor is blue."
Aha.
